Shot of the Day #66

Notice: Undefined variable: read_more in /home/scottp12/public_html/wp-content/themes/traction/archive.php on line 34

In March I was photographing down at South Bank Promenade, Melbourne on a Saturday night, when the weather was still pleasant enough to have dinner by the Yarra River. As always there were the street performers – Fire Twirlers, and as I found out, also a perfect photo opportunity to experiment with slow shutter speeds! Later in Photoshop I grayscaled the crowd and masked the performer into the spotlight.

Making Photographs Black & White in GIMP

Notice: Undefined variable: read_more in /home/scottp12/public_html/wp-content/themes/traction/archive.php on line 34

Black and White images have been neglected ever since the introduction of colour into film photography, due to the fact that colour is ‘best’ and what we see (colour) is the true beauty of a scene/object. As this is the case now, whenever black and white images are created it is perceived as a kind of artistic aesthetic that the photographer has wanted to achieve and considering colour is the norm now, this photograph is viewed in a different light and more of an artists creation rather than the representative. So, I hope to get you more creative in experimenting with your photographs with these easy Black and White conversion processes!

Turning a Photograph into a Polka Dot Image in GIMP

Notice: Undefined variable: read_more in /home/scottp12/public_html/wp-content/themes/traction/archive.php on line 34

This a very quick simple tutorial and a bit of fun! I have made a range of different sizes – 50px, 75px, 100px, 150px patterns so you can easily apply the effect in seconds. I suggest you try some masking of layers as well to experiment with design :).

Looking up at the enormous Rock is something you have to experience first-hand, before I visited Uluru I thought it was a reasonable large rock in the middle of Australia and I’d have no problem jogging up the side. I was completely wrong! Uluru is truly a massive rock emerging from the ground 348m high – only a third of its entire bulk! This is a panorama of three photographs stitched in Photoshop and I was using my polariser, which is such a necessity when photographing out in the Red Centre as it eliminates the glare and saturates the blues.
